Thanks for searching for me. You most likely have found this page by virtue of a google search spurred by some breadcrumbs I left at classmates.paymealot of money.com. I am interested to know how your search went. I hope you understood right off about googling for me. I tried using a url in my comment of the picture at classmates, but they blocked it as being in violation of the tos. Who reads those things anyway? We'll see if this method actually works. I'm sure I can't be the 1st one to do this, although I may be the 1st from Lancaster High School, et al to do it!

Trip to the Henry Ford

I dunno why they call it "the" Henry Ford. I thought it was "Henry Ford Museum" A museum by any other name would smell as sweet... (smells good by the locomotives tho!)
The littleVulcan and I went with S.L.A.S.H. to the museum today. I just finished Photoshopping the red eye outta all those kids heads (eyes, actually), so I figured that I would post some pics.

Here stands the littleVulcan before the great Allegheny locomotive, a humongus 2-6-6-6 and yes, that is the correct spelling, (for those of you reading from Western New York.)

Here's the whole gang (almost) standing on the wing of a biplane while doing stunts in front of a fair somewhere in America. (there was a video projected on a screen in front of and below them to provide the sensation of flying.)

The boy begged me to take his pic next to this huge traction engine. He even posed himself. How cool is that?

A couple of music fans listening to "Rock-N-Roll", I believe they called it... Kids these days and their "8 track tapes" eh?

Next, speaking of webapps, and we were, you know. An online file converter!
You say "so?" (with raised eyebrows, no doubt) (admit it, they raised, didn't they?) I have a number of fine file conversion utilities, GraphicConverter being a really nice one, Preview.app being another. Hey, when you work with good tools, you can do great things, what can I say? Well, I had been looking for ages, ages I tell you for a way (a good one) (that means free ;-) ) to convert .wmv files to .mov or some other modern, workable format.
media-convert.com has a wonderful converter. worked great, no need to enter email address or anything. In fact, it worked as well as:
TinyURL which is something that many of you need to learn about (seeing as how you refuse to use html email, etc.

Here's something that could either be a travesty, or reuse/recycling. There are many accessories out there for our various paraphanalia for our "digital life" (whatever that is) but this one caught my attention:

Dang!, this place looks like a marquis for a Broadway show or something

Hey, there's even a tub in here! Have to let the paint finish curing prior to installing the Swanstone surround. I am still figuring on the best method for tying the window in to this whole thing. I may see if I can scrounge some Swanstone scraps, and use them to create an internal windowsill, as well as line the little cubby hole I framed under the medicine cabinet. This, I am sure, is overkill for our modest little house, but hey, I am an overkiller, afterall!

This is not a new-fangled urinal, it's simply the best method I have found for clamping a sink while the glue cures. (I didn't just say that, did I?) And Yes, I figured that simply setting a sink on a vanity, even a pre-made one was just too easy, so I am mounting the sink to the wall, despite it's objections!

Yep, looks like our Gub-Ment is preparing to approve the use of cloned animals for food. (No, not really) After all, I was created, as all humans are, an omnivore (just look at your teeth). It could make me want to raise my own meat, though. Or start eating the squirrels that have overrun us here at the homestead. The ~~lobbyists~~ proponents of using cloned animals say "hey, we are just gonna use them for breeding, not food" and "you can't tell the difference". Uh-huh. Why do I have trouble believing that??? Time to rip the floor out

Had to make my own joist here, due to boneheads putting walls on top of no structure...
Lemme tell ya, that was fun to ~~beat into submission~~ install!

Yep, johnny flange ended up right on a joist. No matter, now it's not only plug-pruf, but nuclear proof too boot. (this is where I'll hide for the hurricanes now)
Looooove those joist hangars, you know?

Managed to sneak the 1st piece of "subfloor" under the existing flange even. Go figure

There's the rest of the first layer. That's right, first layer... I'm putting in two layers of 3/4" T&G cuz the hallway is that high due to many layers of all kinds of stuff, going all the way back to 1946 i presume. Hmm, should I have saved some of those old tile's for history's sake?

littlestVulcan wanted to be the first to try out the new floor. She just got back from her bath at our wonderful neighbor's house. They were kind enough to let the vulcan chillin go over to stay clean during the project

YeeHaww! now we're making progress! new OSB T&G too boot! Wow, there's a lot of room in here!

I even got nutty enough to take the yucky ceiling down.

New tub, with an actual wall to compliment. Verry insulated, too!

This morning littleVulcan and I will be driving to the southern tier of western New York for a camping trip. He is so excited, he may clone himself out of sheer will. He is so incredibly cute, tho I am admittedly biased. Here are some pics from our Community Day with the local Homeschool Group here in Michigan, where homeschooling your child is still legal.

Ok, I haven't posted in a whole week... What kin I say, I've been in class. Old brains learn slow, you know!
In case you haven't heard, Microsoft has released it's competition for the Apple iPod. What's that you say? iPods have been around for years? Oh, yeah, you're right. I guess Microsoft never thought they would catch on or something. Frankly, neither did I, though now I find I could really use one, more as a book on tape thing for studying than a music player. Also useful for transferring files between computers.
This blog entry is more about corporations naming things with less than appropriate names. Perhaps some of you may remember the Pinto, a hot little car produced by Ford Motor Company. Turned out that "pinto" sounds much like a word that means something rather personal in Brazil.
This leads me to this article from iPodobserver.com, which is quite amusing, about "Zune" being subject to a very similiar condition in our northern neighbor.

I suppose that every one can remember what they were doing 5 years ago today. I know I can. It still somehow feels surreal, like something that terrible couldn't really happen. It is obvious to all but the most pig headed (pun not intended) that it really did happen, that many Dads and Moms did not come home to their children that night. Wives never saw their husbands again, and husbands never saw their wives again. While people lose their lives unexpectedly every day, this was different. This was an attack on a way of life that is a result of our forefathers creating a government that fostered exploration, ingenuity, self reliance and accountability. Self-government, if you will. Remember this anniversary, that as Americans, we must continue the legacy of exploration, ingenuity, self reliance and accountability in order that our lives, and our children's lives are able to continue in a truly free nation.

More Destruction Construction

Let's just call it "constructive activity"

Here is the basement (cellar, for any rednecks out there) (btw no offense, some of my friends and relatives are rednecks) in before and after mode.

These are the before pics (ok, they are kinda "during" as some will notice the nice, shiny plastic I had just installed

By the way, this is really merely a "virtual reconstruction", not an actual one, just in case some of you either are or know, or are perhaps related to a building or health inspector

Funny story: while I was in the basement breaking the cast iron pipe to smithereens, Mrs. Vulcan came over the walkie talkie with some witty comment or other. I replied with some sharp whit or other. This exchange went back and forth for a little while, on and off.
I finished our on air flirtation with "Just don't flush the toilet" meant to serve as a humorous warning, as I had just smashed the big pipe off, and bad things could happen should the toilet (which I had failed to empty prior to the start of this phase of the project) be activated, so to speak.
No sooner had the radio waves ceased emanating from my transmitter when I heard the most interesting gurgling noise. You guessed it, my Lovely heard only "flush the toilet", and being extremely responsive and full of duty, complied immediately.
She realized something was somewhat less than perfect when she heard my screams. As some of you may surmise, screaming cannot and did not alter the gravitational field in the area of the water, forcing it back into the pipe, back into the now out moded commode.
Funny, eh?

These are pics from after the removal of the mostly plugged, very thin, rotted, probably original 1946 vintage cast iron pipe

Sure looks cleaner (installation-wise) and Bonus! no Bumpus on the Nogginus when you walk by. Seriously, I managed to fanagle the pipes to stay above the beams.

I spent countless hours in the Lowe's plumbing isle planning, plotting, nay, scheming how to make it fit. I am proud to say, that true to excitedVulcan form, they have been engineered, much like the space shuttle, to use every available inch of space as they wind their way through the foundation, to the outside, and beyond...

I wonder what scrap cast iron is going for these days?

I tell you what...

With the heavy soil we have here, I couldn't do without some sort of digging machine, and this one fits the Vulcan method. Inexpensive, fix it yourself, adaptable and powerful.

I would have had some pics of the new pipe in the ditch, but I did that kinda late at night, so I figured that getting the job done was more important than stopping to document the event.

Works great with a new powerflush toilet too boot!

More on the baathrom remodel in the near future.

Cascades Civil War Muster, Mister!

That's right, we mustered over to Jackson, MI for the Cascades Civil War Muster, Where there was one extremely cute littleVulcan who attracted the attention of a local photojournalist. See coverage here at the Jackson Citizen Patriot. He is the cute one, in case you wondered...

It was the first time the boy had seen that many firearms doing their thing all at once. We parked right next to the Union Cannon, which was good, cuz littleVulcan doesn't like loud noises :)

The Battle was truly something to see. When the Rebs charged the Union line, and just "kep-a-comin", well, it just made my hair stand on end.

Can't even imagine what those boys went through. What a bloody mess. There were over 35,000 men wounded or killed there in that one battle. Hard to compare to today's fighting, as far as sheer numbers go, anyway. I can only speculate that battle is battle, no matter when it happens, tho'. Thank God I never had to do that sort of thing. I pray that my boy never does either. If, one day, he must, I pray that he will be ready.

I am now excitedly Self Employed as a personal financial planner, so consider this my shameless plug. nuff said.

I have also been working as a helper on the new Hickory Nut Tree Farm, started by my boy, who will be known on these pages as "littleVulcan".

What? You are making that little boy plant all those trees all by himself??? You might say...

Breaking news: 1 dead, 5 injured at Jewish Federation in Seattle

 According to the Seattle Times, a man got through security at the Jewish Federation and told staff members, "I'm a Muslim American; I'm angry at Israel," then began shooting, according to Amy Wasser-Simpson, the vice president for planning and community services for the Jewish Federation. 

At 4:03 p.m. police got a 911 call, saying one or two people had been shot. At one point the suspect himself called police and told them he had hostages.

Several witnesses said they saw a man walk up to the entrance of the building and shoot a woman in the leg. The man then walked into the building and made it up to the roof.
Witnesses said they heard one shot while the man was on the roof. The man then went back inside and witnesses said they heard several more shots.

It sounds like there was a delay between the when the first victim was shot and when the rest were shot. I keep thinking that having law abiding citizens armed with simple, affordable sidearms could have saved people here.

Its also possible that the agency formerly known as the INS could help out here too, but we don't know enough about the suspect yet.

Debbie is an area resident who has appeared on numerous nationally run TV news shows to lend her expertise in the area of Islamic extremism in the southeastern lower Michigan region.

Looks as though our tax dollars are at "work" here again. Lesse, really don't like political speech coming from the pulpit when it's a Christian church, but that kinda vitriol coming from buddies of Michigan congressmen and even the FBI? In a 501c3 organization? Oh yeah, that's great. Freedom, you know. Occupation. Yeah, that's it.

I tried rebut a liberal colleague of mine who snidely commented about how Isreal is killing a bunch of people by attempting an explanation through illustration.
The illustration I used, it turns out is the same one used by another distinguished blogger, John Krenson. Although the illustrations differ slightly, in that I used a newspaper to smack someone, and John's weapon of choice was a hand slap, the arguments are the same.

I can see some reason for this whole registration thing, actually. Probably due to my Vulcan sensibilities. But this Vulcan is more of a libertarian than most, so I think it's quite a waste of the gub ments money. Gub-Ment? Hey!, that's me! (till 2008, anyway)

OK, I give. I'll tell a little about excitedVulcan. (speaking in the 3rd person is kinda icky, but anonymity is crucial!)

excitedVulcan is a term that was given me by a good friend and associate of mine. It seems that when I speak to clients, I sound to him, rather like a character on a somewhat familiar TV series conversing with various federation personnel. (do see this friend of mine for your financial questions)

The following is proof (and an illustration) of both my Vulcanhood, and the fact that I kin get excited about it!

I think this is perhaps less than a great thing. Although, my perception of myself is perhaps swayed by the opinion of numerous financial sales professionals that champion the approach of "insurance isn't bought, it's sold", or "why explain it to them, they don't get it anyway". I happen to believe that is the wrong approach, and favor education.

Now don't get me wrong, I am by no means an educator (or educated, some would say) but still feel that people ought to weigh both the pro's and con's of what they purchase. Hey, everything has both pro's and con's, (it's common sense, no?) but many times people refuse to find out about the cons. I believe they do this for various reasons, chiefly, "it takes too much time", or "I just don't have the energy". C'mon, people, its yer freakin money here. The majority of you spent 40 hours a week earning your quarters, why not spend a couple hours each quarter learning about where you are putting your quarters.

Next thing is: Don't learn about your investments from periodicals like Parade Magazine, where half truths and misinformation are written by someone with no qualifications other than "they done wrote stuff before they wrote this". There are a litany of other publications that are likewise poor places from which to educate yourself about what you own. I had the idea of complaining to these various places to "set them straight" about their erroneous reporting methods, but was warned off by someone that had gone there before me. Simply put: if someone buys their ink by the barrel, don't argue with them.

OK, where should you get your info?
There are numerous methods to get what you need, but you will need to arm yourselves first, with a little thing called Critical Thinking.

I found this at Little Green Footballs. They have the whole roll call there, but since so few decided to not support Israel, just the "nay" votes are listed prior to the jump. Yep, Michigan is well represented, er I don't know how "well" represented it actually is, what with these representatives caving to the large Islamic population in southeastern lower Michigan.

Wait, no, that can't be it, must be some other reason that 3 of the 8 nay votes came from Michigan.

Yeah, I know, "that's not new". But having such an overwhelming amount of research and proof that a blogger operating a blog that is critical of the current administration is using a source that doesn't exist for such quotes as "the G******d constitution is just a piece of paper" is.

(I know, I know, run-on sentence. Mrs. Johnson would be upset)

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) A 30-year-old Cheyenne, WY man is this year's buffalo chip-tossing champion.

Anthony Salaz threw a dried buffalo dropping 126-feet-1-inch on Saturday to win the World Championship Buffalo Chip Toss held in Chadron.

The event is part of Chadron's annual Fur Trade Days celebration.

Placing second was last year's winner: 25-year old Ryan Bohnenkamp of Omaha at 114-feet, 3 inches. Three-time world champion Ron Miller of Chadron placed third.

In the women's competition, 26-year-old Dayna Spencer of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, took the title.

The event has been running more than 20 years and organizers have said in the past that they have not heard of anywhere else having a buffalo chip throwing contest. And they say no one has challenged their claim that the event is the world championship.

My Dad and youngest brother saw the movie "Flight 93" as many people did. I wonder how many of said people are familiar with the memorial proposed to mark the place where ordinary people, who fought for their country in an extraordinary way, came to rest.

Happy Birthday to the Littlest Vulcan

well well well, Happy Birthday to my Littlest Vulcan!

That's right, my littlest Vulcan (should that be "Vulcanette"?) turns 2 years old today!

we will be celebrating paying for that new wing on the hospital with the cost of her birth this evening, probably after her big brother's 1st T-Ball lesson/practice/ what do you call it in T-Ball anyway?

Back to the extremely cute Litttle Vulcan, she has seemingly shunned the "Princess" stage, and gone right to "Queen". I think someone may have mentioned the phrase "terrible two's" within earshot of her Queenlike ears, and she has taken that as an instruction for how a two year old should act!

Grandpa Vulcan is still visiting, which was handy cuz we got to leave Boy Vulcan with him while Mrs Vulcan and I took the Littlest Vulcan Queen to see her doctor today. It seems she has some seasonal allergies, which are causing hives. We'll petition our highly recommended allergist for an appointment sooner than later to rule out food allergies.

In other, local news, our new neighbors have taken some trees out, which definitely changes the look of the place for the better. They also intend to dig a basement under the house, to which i say hey, knock yerself out! I wish i had the time for such things, that's for sure. Actually, I shouldn't complain, as I'm telecommuting today due to the boss being out, and there really isn't much to do at there anyway.

I'll post world news and commentary later, as I'm going to play with Grampa and Little Vulcan now (might build some model airplanes and fly them, speaking of model airplanes, science, and the like, here's a link to a place that is decidedly an argument for homeschooling. Either that, or an argument against unfettered access to the internent.

I saw this a couple days ago, and figured that some of you may want to read it. Follow the link at the bottom, I've included an excerpt to get your attention...

Jessen's biological mother was 17 years old and 7 1/2 months pregnant she went to a Planned Parenthood clinic to have a saline abortion.

The abortion failed and Jessen was born weighing two pounds and afflicted with cerebral palsy as a result of the complicated birth.

Harvey approached Jessen after hearing her story and asked her if she would sing the national anthem in the Colorado House on May 8.

"I never knew anything about her (before)," Harvey said. "I thought this was an incredibly divine opportunity to meet her and ask her to stay."

Jessen agreed and Harvey introduced her to his colleagues as a "friend with cerebral palsy." He asked Speaker Andrew Romanoff if Jessen could sing the national anthem and the speaker agreed.

During the song, Jessen lost her balance and leaned on Harvey for support. When she began to forget the words, saying that she was nervous, legislators and guests began to sing along with her.

After she was finished, the speaker, according to Harvey, stated, "Let us give her a hand not only for her performance today but also for her advocacy work," for cerebral palsy.

Harvey also said a reporter for a Denver newspaper told Jessen that "her rendition captured the spirit of the national anthem more powerfully than any she had ever heard before."

Little Vulcan's new friend

I should not have kept you in suspense. Little Vulcan's new friend's name is Natalie, which is a very nice name, and goes with a very nice little girl. She is visiting our new neighbors, one of whom is her Sister, the other, her very new Brother in law. Mrs Vulcan has been over to meet them, I hope to this weekend sometime.

In other news, my Dad has come for a visit, and Little Vulcan is ecstatic, as is Littlest Vulcan. (she was only shy for like an hour before she started flirting with him)

I see the Blogger servers are undergoing maintenance tomorrow at noon, so don't blame me for the system outages, although I was playing around with *gasp* html code!

First Blogger(tm) Post

Ok, so here it all begins...

I came home today, with the goal of starting this blog, after deciding on the name, host, etc. to be greeted by my excited little Vulcan. He was excited to tell me that he has a new friend, which is hardly anything new, due to his heavy social schedule that Mrs. Vulcan keeps him on. This new friend, he continued, was here, and he would like me to meet him, and furthermore, "he's a girl!"

can't think of a better welcome home than my little Vulcan's cuteness.

I promise, I'll conquer this blogging thing, and have pictures etc up soon.
